I've loved enamelwork all my life, made brief forays trying it every so often, but was really only able to dive fully into it a couple of years ago. One reason: Enameling is a tedious, fiddly business that requires the patience of a saint, an incredible work ethic, and a meticulous attention to detail. Enameling AND engraving is all that, squared. Therefore, great enamelists are relatively rare, and until recently it was hard to find one who would talk about it, harder still to find one who would (or could) teach, and nearly impossible to find one who could write a great, well-illustrated book detailing the processes.That's changing--slowly--and Phil Barnes is one of the few in that vanguard. The book he's written is both gorgeous and informative. I bought the Kindle edition and will also buy the paper version for my library (very rare that I do that these days), allowing me to reference it both from my tablet at the jeweler's bench, or turn the pages with pretty pictures on the sofa.Barnes details the history of enameling and engraving processes, shows mind-blowing examples of his work (his description of how his Dunwich Bowl was made is wonderful), and explains the reasons behind some of the things I've been taught but never quite "got." The book is about champleve, one of the more demanding forms of enameling, but Barnes' detailed explanations would be helpful to just about anyone working in glass and metal. He shares a lot of tips for increasing clarity of the enamel, preventing cracking, developing an enamel test process that actually is useful to your ongoing work, and best methods for enamel preparation.Some of his tips--such as the use of quills to lay down enamel--are unexpected (now, where can I get my hands on a bunch of goose feathers?) and others are just plain revelatory. Three of them more than paid for the price of the book in my very next project.I hope this fellow teaches classes--I'd love to take one. Phil Barnes wrote an excellent book on his own techniques. He was a true inspiration in his field and fortunately he shared the history and his knowledge throughout this book.
